Strategies to Enhance the Speed of Your 3D Printer

Every hobbyist wants to be able to 3D print faster and make figures and models they've wanted for a long time in a matter of hours, not days, weeks, or months. Wouldn't it be great if you could make 3D items 10 times faster? So, today in this blog we are going to see that how to increase the speed of your 3D printer so that you can print more quickly without affecting the quality of your prints.

Fastest 3D Printers

It's possible that one day, all of us will have the opportunity to purchase a gadget that is both inexpensive and quick, one that can convert STL files into highly detailed figurines and models from your favourite video games and movies in as little as a couple of hours or even more quickly. But some smart people can already enjoy this kind of thing.

John Hart and Jamison Go, who work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States, are brilliant when it comes to improving techniques. MIT news says that the two professors and their colleagues worked on making 3D printing faster and made a new machine called Fast FFF.

 John Hart (on right)

Fast FFF is an abbreviation for "fast fused filament fabrication." The device is capable of depositing material ten times quicker than any other desktop machine now available. Additionally, the printhead for the high-speed 3D printing may function with materials that are renewable.
Engineers observed that in order to accelerate the process of 3D printing, it was necessary to solve the following three primary factors:
  1. The force applied by the printhead while pushing the 3D printing material through the nozzle.
  2. The time needed to heat the material to melt it and let it flow.
  3. The moving speed of the printhead.

In the Fast FFF version, all of these things were made better. So, it was able to 3D print two easy frames for eyeglasses in less than 4 minutes and a complicated bevel gear in about 10 minutes. These models were printed at a layer height of 0.2 mm and turned out to be strong and lasting.

Tips to Improve 3D Printing Speed

1. Change the speed of 3D printing:

If you want to 3D print faster, you can start by experimenting with the settings. Every expert likes to use one particular type of slicing software. So, look into all the options and change your settings.
Amazingly, you can change how fast the print head goes. Sometimes it does not compromise the quality of a 3D made model that is very complicated. And if you are making something simple, you can make it go much faster without losing quality.

2. Change Nozzle:

You don't always worry about the accuracy of your print. In this scenario, a larger nozzle may be sufficient. You can, for example, modify the nozzle on your 3D printer from 0.4mm to 0.8mm. You can also select a 1.0mm print head.
A lot of things depends on your nozzle size. The standard print heads are 0.2mm and 0.4mm. But a more significant size can save your printing time and lead to faster 3D printing.

3. Increase Layer Height:

In order to boost the speed of your 3D printer, you may need to increase the layer height. This can be accomplished by changing a nozzle with a print head that is larger. The greatest height that can be selected is equal to approximately 75% of the diameter of the nozzle that is currently being used.

Higher the height of layers, the printing will be faster with lower resolution and vice versa.

4. Change Infill Pattern:

If you don't want to mess with the infill density but still want to speed up 3D printing even though you don't have a fast 3D printer, try changing the infill pattern in the settings. Different hobbyists work with different patterns, but the most famous "speed-saving" version is the "lines" or "rectilinear."
The filling between the lines is very easy. With rectilinear infill, your 3D printer will move less when making a figure, which can cut the printing time by 20% to 25%. But the models won't be as strong as they would be with a triangle or grid design. To know more about infill pattern you can see this blogpost.

5. Print two models at the same time:

Another method of speed 3D printing without losing the quality of the prints is to work on two projects simultaneously. It is only possible if both models or figurines are small and can fit on the same print bed without interfering with each other.
The option can be adjusted in the slicing software. Choose to center and arrange both 3D printing models and make them in the same batch. The main drawback of such a method is that both projects will be done with the same filament, but the final printing speed will be significantly reduced.
